LTSP: The Linux Terminal Server Project

The Linux Terminal Server Project adds thin-client support to Linux servers. LTSP is a flexible, cost effective solution that isempowering schools, businesses, and organizations all over the world to easily install and deploy desktop workstations. A growing number of Linux distributions include LTSP out-of-the-box.
Shiny new thin-clients and legacy PCs alike can be used to browse the Web, send e-mail, create documents, and run other desktop applications. LTSP not only improves Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), but more importantly, provides increased value over traditional computing solutions. LTSP workstations can run applications from Linux and Windows servers.
Linux thin-clients have proven to be extremely reliable because tampering and viruses are virtually non-existent. It’s distributed under the GNU General Public License, meaning it’s free and always will be.

The LTSP-5 Terminal Server implementation that was developed in Ubuntu together with ltsp.org and debian, is now being adopted into most other distributions (Fedora, Gentoo, OpenSuSE). With Ubuntu Terminal Services you get the most recent and reliable Terminal Server implementation currently available on the linux market.
Recent studies have shown that using diskless Thin Clients in office environments saves on average around 50% of your power costs. Maintenance, user and software management of a Terminal Server is centralised on the server instead of maintaining individual work places. All data is stored on the server, so if client hardware breaks you won’t lose data. Hardware replacement is as easy as changing a lightbulb, allowing users to carry on with their work in minutes.

Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop is an installable Open Source virtual desktop and application delivery solution for corporations. It allows IT departments to deliver desktops and applications easily and at a lower cost than other solutions. It works in both a Windows and Linux environment.

The goal of this website is to give an end to end open source solution for a typical small company including Telephony, Document management, Customer Relation Application, Networking, Remote access, Desktop solutions and so on.
Although only the tools/applications have been listed on the website for the moment, a complete network diagram and individual how-to articles will follow.
Please note that for most of the installation instructions, we will not re-invent the wheel. A large number of very competent experts have already written how-to articles, we will just refer you to those. We will only document the missing links between the different components or if we feel that some installations could be better documented.
